On item that might help is the smallest cable ties sold by Radio Shack.
About three inches long and 1/8th inch wide, they can bond beams strongly
together at a critical point. Disposable, you just cut them off to get
rid of them. They also do not care about hole spacings lining up.
Non-Lego, which to some is a religious transgression, but strong, cheap,
often effective in special situations, and easy to find. Less radical
than glue.
