What about an impact sensor that sits somewhere in the interior of the robot?
Something similar to whatever triggers car alarms and/or car air bags.
Perhaps one could be constructed using three touch sensors that would give a
good indication of where the impact occured.
This of course removes the possibility of stopping before the impact.
