One idea I was having was something like a ring that could shrink and
grow, sort of like have four sections, two of which can slide into the
other two, then, no matter what part you press on now, the whole ring
compresses into a smaller diameter. You could then attach a single
sensor somewhere along the ring, whenever and wherever there is a bump,
the ring would compress, the touch sensor would trigger. Of course, this
wouldn't give any direction information, but it would nonetheless need
only one sensor.

Subject: Bumper Ideas Needed

Hi

I've been the working in making a flexible bumper using only
one switch for my CyberMaster and after constructing about 4
or 5 prototypes I've found out that after all I don't know
how to make a decent flexible-and-with-lots-of-travel bumper.
I need such a bumper for detecting impacts ahead of the real
impact so I can make a soft stop before impacting the object.
Also, the bumper should be able to read impacts with a wide
angle (45 degrees).

Since it seems bumpers are one of those things everybody
needs and LEGO has forgotten to create, I think we could
create a mini-contest on how to create the best bumper with
standard LEGO parts.

By the way, anyone have any mechanical idea how to make a
small round bumper that reacts to 360 degrees impacts (I
mean, any horizontal impact around the sensor) and using only
one sensor?

What about an impact sensor that sits somewhere in the interior of the robot? Something similar to whatever triggers car alarms and/or car air bags. Perhaps one could be constructed using three touch sensors that would give a good indication of (...) (26 years ago, 4-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)

Check out some of the links that discuss using more than one sensor to a given imput. One article showed how to attach 3 touch sensors to one input and how to attach three light sensors to one input. Also how to make tempature sensors and etc. John (...) (26 years ago, 5-Dec-98, to lugnet.robotics)
