Re: Why Java for Robots (university vs hobbyists)

(...) Maybe we are at cross purposes here. You may be right, that for many hobbyists, Java is too advanced and complex, and since their needs are simpler, C is more than enough. Ease of use and low cost is probably more important than computing (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why Java for Robots (was NXT and bluetooth enabled phones)

(...) Why do you say that? I thought we were discussing Java on robotics. You said Java for small robots was not practical. I presented our system as but one implementation which works. (...) That's the total *available* memory. The JVM is in (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java (or other langs) for Robots

(...) ... (...) The 3-level concept as traditionally taught doesn't really say #2 is 'subsumption' -- that's my perception of it. Here's an example of typical course material: (URL) was just making a rough analogy to your "3 levels of robotics (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) Yeah, I can understand though I still contend 100 is too small darn it! But your point is well understood (especially by me who has dealt with countless examples of this scenario). (...) Its fantastic no doubt! Very rarely do you find such a (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) I suspect that the logistics is a big issue. I am a debugger for a living, and know how to report the information that is critical to a bug. As a developer (of LPub and LSynth for example). Most of the bugs reported to me are extremely vague (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to do if not selected for the NXT Developer's Program?

(...) I agree. Simply put, more types of parts to work with increases the realm of possibility. Kev (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why Java for Robots (was NXT and bluetooth enabled phones)

Bruce (...) Ermm. How much does a NXT have? No doubt you think that everyone should buy one of your systems but far more NXTs will be sold. Lookng at the posts on other robotics newsgroups, I reckon that over 90% of home-made robots do not have (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: Why java (or other langs) for Robots

Dan (...) (at (...) Wow, that's nice to hear. Brooke's philosopy deals very neatly with levels 1 and 2 but how do CMU say we should integrate the high-level stuff into it? That has always been my difficulty with subsumption architecture. It's fine (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) Even though I do wish all of the above conjecture was true, I think it might be just a slip on the LEGO SHOP website. I agree that the August date was probably chosen to be inline with the next school year and that there is a strong (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to do if not selected for the NXT Developer's Program?

(...) I don't think it requires less creativity, but I do think it reduces the creative possibilities for those that don't already have a collection of studded technic bricks. There are some things that studless just doesn't do very well, and having (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: LEGO Day at the Owatonna Arts Center

(...) Kevin, Congratulations on your MUP status. This is GREAT news. Good to see you on board. IF I may ask, who else is among your ranks? Chris (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

"Steve Hassenplug" <Steve@TeamHassenplug.org> wrote in message news:24317.66.84.205...air.com... (...) OMG! That's an amazing discovery! You mean the new studless system is compatible and can interconnect to the *old* studded system? No way!!!!! (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to do if not selected for the NXT Developer's Program?

(...) If you look at the sample models, you'll see there are still some studded beams, but very few. It looks like just enough to connect a studless model to a baseplate. Can you explain why you think building studless requires less creativity than (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

Re: What to do if not selected for the NXT Developer's Program?

(...) I'm still trying to come to grips with the "studless" building thing. It seems to me that will leave out an awful lot of creativity. Does that mean no technic beams either? That is a major part of my robot construction theme! DLC (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) Kevin, I looked just today after reading John's message, and it said June 19th for me. But now I looked again and it just says 'Coming Soon'. Hmmm. Does Lego use Akamai? -Kyle (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

LEGO Day at the Owatonna Arts Center

Hi, On Saturday January 28th I will be having a local showing of some of my MOCs at the Owatonna (indian name pronounced Oh-wah-tah-na) Arts Center in Owatonna Minnesota. I will be bringing mostly walkers made using RCX, micro-scouts, micro-motors, (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.loc.us.mn, lugnet.robotics, lugnet.technic)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) Who says? "June" is not "soon", IMHO. So I think it's slipping forward! Here's one possibility- They were already planning to ship 100 in February. When they saw the enormous response to that program, they're changing their tune- they are (...) (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) This morning it said June 19th. Now, it just says "Coming soon". The release date is slipping... :) Steve (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) Hi John, Obviously now it doesn't say "June 19th", but yesterday when I added NXT to my shop at home wish list, it did. Someone changed it. Kev (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)

  Re: NXT release date.

(...) Someone said they expected the release to fall back to Christmas. I would expect the release to fall from June to August. However, in this case, John and I don't know any more than anyone else... Steve (20 years ago, 19-Jan-06, to lugnet.robotics)
