Shell has a set of 3 different buildings, 1254, 1255, and 1256 available at
their stations.  These sets are reasonably priced and come chock full of
great town pieces.  You can get these sets at any Shell station with a $10
fill-up (at least in California, but I would guess nation-wide). With one
fill-up, they let me buy as many sets as I wanted.

I found some posts way back, but I had ignored these posts assuming people
were talking about the cheezy little $1.99 cars and spaceships they used to
have.

THESE sets offer great architectural pieces in inexpensive sets.  Here are
some mini-reviews (sorry if someone already posted about this):

1254
This is the best set, in my opinion.  It is a gas station office and goes
for only $11.99.
The main model is pretty cool.  Although somewhat juniorized, it is far more
complex and interesting looking than other recent gas station sets.  My wife
is eagerly building this set as I write.

This set really shines in terms of pieces.  It contains two black 1x4x6
windows with light-blue tinting.  Previously, you could get one in the
McDonalds set (about the same price), but this set has 2.  Also, this set
has a 1x4x6 door with a white frame and black door (with light-blue tinted
glass).  I don't know of any other way of getting a white door frame.  It
also has 4 light-trans-blue 3x6x1 windshields (used as sky-lights).  There
are also a good deal of "juniorized" white beams and panels.  I find these
handy for building sky-scrapers.  Also, the set has a reasonable supply of
dark-gray beams.  There are also two 2x3x2 "cabinets" with trans-light-blue
covers (used as freezers) and 1 white desk with a drawer.  Finally, it
contains tons of FOOD!  Finally, something to eat other than pizza!  It has
apples, bananas, and popcicles.  It comes on a 8x32 green plate (I can
always use more of these).

Overally, I rate this set as excellent.  The main model is nice, and the
parts are wonderful.  It is also a great value.

1255
This is a car-wash and also includes a small, mini-SUV.  The main model
looks nice (juniorized, but not overly) and is actually quite fun to play
with!  I had a bit of fun pushing the car through the wash.  The 3 brushes
automatically move out of the way and then flip back into place once the car
goes through.

From a parts point of view, this set is so-so.  It has 4 black-framed 1x4x5
windows with trans-light-blue panes.  If LEGO didn't sell these cheaply in
bulk, I'd give this set a much higher rating, but given that you can get 10
of these windows from LEGO for $9, the set really isn't worthwhile for just
these parts.  It also comes with a good deal of white beams, pillars, and
other regular bricks.  At $11.95, it is a good supply of these (although I
think 1254 provides more of these parts).  It also contains a decent amount
of dark gray beams.  It comes with 3 twisty black hoses.  It contains 9 blue
brush parts.

I rate this set as pretty good.  The main model is fun and looks pretty
good.  The parts are decent and the value is pretty good.

1256
This contains a pair of gas pumps and a canopy over the top.  This set is th
most expensive, coming in at $1995.

The main model looks nice, but there just doesn't seem to be all that much
to do (compared to the other sets).  You can drive the car and motor-cycle
up and get gas, but that's about it.

From a parts standpoint, the value of this set depends on how badly you want
certain parts.  The key parts in this set are 3 4x10x2 white, angled roof
pieces with trans dark blue windows.  One of these is available in two of
the space port sets, but the cheapest set there is $29.95.  So, if you are
in the market for these roof pieces, then the set is an excellent value.
Othere than those windows, there isn't too much of interest here.  There are
two 16x16 road plates (I already have zillions of these).  It has a decent
supply of yellow and white bricks (and 2 large yellow plates), but the other
two sets have much better selections (especially considering that they cost
much less).  The car (a Ferrari) has two trans-red 1x2 grill plates.  I've
not seen these in any other set.  It includes 4 flowers (not bad for a $20
set).  This is also a good supply of 1x3x1 black bricks - It has 10.

I rate this set as so-so unless you are really after those large white
ceiling pieces with the dark trans-blue windows.  The main model is just OK
and those ceiling pieces are the only really great pieces in the set.

I hope this was useful.  I recommend buying as many of the 1254's as you can
get (unless you live in my area, in which case, I recommend that you not buy
ANY so there are some more left for me).

Have to agree with Brad H. now that I've picked up all the 11 Shell promo
sets.  They are in my opinion some of the better Town System sets since at
LEAST 1996.  I think LEGO may have been targeting us AFOLs with this
offering, and since Town is dead in the 2001 catalog, praise be to them for
bringin' it out at Shell.  All together the full line ran a little over
$70.00 in California dollars (Don't you know our money is funny?), and that
ain't bad considering how much/little you get in a single box at that price.
My favorite details: 2(!) Ferrari cars (street, racer), FOOD, and the fact
that I now can bring some competition to my Exxon only Town.  It is my
SINCERE hope that LEGO will continue this series with a REAL race set and
include other competing auto maker names and various elements of track life.
Happy day!
Aaron

Get 'em while they're red hot at $25 USD at Target/U.S.A.  Pretty much the
deal no matter what you do.

Okay, maybe I'm the only one around who didn't find this set a deal, even at
$24.88.  I also bought it for parts, particularly for the macaroni bricks,
figuring there would be enough other elements to make it worth the price.  I
was wrong.  True, it has some great white and yellow slopes as well as 45
degree 2x2 slopes in a new and interesting color (although who could really
ever hope to amass enough of them to actually build anything substantial?).
The train gates go in the pile for the time I ever do something with
trains, optimist that I am.  And I love those cabinets even though I don't
really have much use for them in reality.  Add to that the small handful of
bricks and plates that appeal to everyone and that's about it.

Those curved slopes?  The eight navy blue ones hold the most promise, but I
don't have the imagination to visualize them within my town as anything other
than oppressive awnings or gas station/bus stop "roofs".  And besides, that
isn't a color I would use for those structures.

I really liked the 7144 Slave I.  But I had got the majority of them for
$7.44 USD-- for that price it was a fantastic slope pack.  Maybe that
experience spoiled me, but you can consider me one person who DOESN'T think
this week's Target find is a deal, particularly if you are a townie.

BTW of the two sets I bought, one Jango Fett helmet was very sloppily printed,
and one of those cockpit cover things had foggy patches on it from rubbing
against something in the box.  :-(

Brad Hamilton has fairly reviewed these sets, but I had such a positive
reaction to them I wanted to make a review.

These sets are actually models built from bricks and plates.

The presence of the original Shell sticker from 1980 makes me imagine that
someone at Shell said "Make some sets like you used to make Town sets."
They're not *classic*, but, when you build the Food Shop and the only barfy
parts are the extra tall bricks, it hearkens back to old Lego values like
interlocking bricks and sandwiched plates.

The cars in this range are not trivialized; they're town cars with classic
parts circa 1985 like 1x3 doors and wheel covers (on one piece bases, but
some are *minimal* bases with plenty of plates doing the job.) One of the
varied cars even solves the "head bumps canopy" problem with extra plates
under the doors--when was the last official model that really tried?

There is a commendable lack of 1x1 connectors. In some cases like the tags
on these gas cylinders they are even cool. (2554, sorry, this is a 1998
set.) I just really dislike 1x1 connectors in abundance because they added
only frills and tool holders to the past several years' lines while
structure went neglected. However the use of itty bitty pieces in the Shell
sets make me think the designer was actually modeling something, providing
realism instead of frills.

The tanker truck is a little weak, between the big windshield and funny
looking proportions, but it's not too juniorized, it is made from many
regular plates.

The car wash rollers (1255) are innovative in using a 10x hose to provide
the springy action behind the brushes.

I have to agree with Brad that 1254 is the best overall value. For a small
set, the interior has nice modeling: freezers, counter, cash register. And
did I mention that the structure is actually formed of bricks, plates, and
slopes?

The combination of all these Shell sets could probably be distilled into one
service station to rival 575, the classic Shell station. Maybe that's too
much praise but darn it, these sets make me feel good about Lego tonight.

Sorry I meant set 6375 (Gas Station) from 1980. It would be fun to modernize
that one with a food store, car wash and tire shop while keeping the style,
oh yes...
