With a nice part time job on my hands (which means an absolute surge in personal funding :), I’ve set my eyes on this particularal model - the Olympus c 5050 zoom; after reading sporadic reviews from a few sources (hopefully, they are as reputable as they claim :) PC World.com gave the model top laurels on its listing of digital cameras over $500 USD, so this should mean something, right?

Here’s the actual review, with a listing of specifications...

And the model itself.

5.0 MP around $500 with a f1.8 maximum aperture lens and 3.4x optical zoom: Not too shabby for that price. It can also facilitate additional lenses with a step-up ring.

Right now I’m messing around with an outdated HP photosmart model, but I’m looking to sell it. Any takers? :)

I’m planning on eventually buying some close-up filters so I can do macro with no distortion and at full zoom) and a hotshoe.

The model you have in mind doesn’t come equipped with a hotshoe? Hmm...

I’ve been really impressed by some of the pictures here, and I’m wondering what cameras you guys use. I know that Bram uses a Nikon coolpix 990 (I think) and that the coolpix line is great for macrophotography, but I wanted something a bit larger with more versitlity. I currently use a Sony P-71, but it simply doesn’t focus close enough and doesn’t have any manual features, such as aperature control, shutter speed, flash sync, etc.

Yes, I can definitely relate here - particularly with many of the shots Todd Lehman has taken. todd, would you tell us already what camera you’re using? If you recall his release of the Blacktron Pod there were some amazingly crisp pictures there.

Speaking of which, it would be nice to see a photography tutorial on hosted on lugnet or elsewhere describing lighting, photoshop editing, camera/ lens selections and various apparatus. In this regard, treading through the same discussion over and over again would be less likely.

Perhaps there’s some documentation over here in .publish? If not, it would be a service to the community for someone to get one compiled.

So, what do you guys use? Any recomendations?

Right now I’m using the HP model, but that will change within the next few weeks! Aside from that, I use a canon AE-1 model for non-lego purposes, but its FD lenses are expensive (especially the sigma models and any non-fisheye lens under 24mm!)

Hope that helps somewhat!

(...) The Fuji can take extra lenses too, in fact I'm going to try to buy a close-up filter so I can just screw it on and use the camera in normal mode zooming in. This reduces distortion and allows for easier lighting. Yeah, the Olypmus was (...) (21 years ago, 8-Jul-03, to lugnet.publish.photography, FTX)
