Another possibility would be if there was some way for someone to change their
user name to something readily recognizable (I use my last name, for instance)
without messing up links.  Perhaps there already is such a feature?

Seems the links issue is the big one - perhaps if there was a link on the
Brickshelf mainpage to this page: http://www.lugnet.com/~1763/Brickshelf

Or even, if there were a statement on the site about how to opt yourself in -
for example, urging Users to explicitly use their full name in all Folder
Descriptions, so that a search for "hoffman" would lead to one of my folders.

Perhaps a statement that explains the COPPA situation, so that users could infer
the solution would be to provide their name in a folder, etc.

Or create a Username description (like for individual folders, but under the
main directory) - where a user could add their name if they would like.

Obviously, I dont know about legality in this issue - just throwing out ideas.
