My favorite concise guide to web design can be found at:
http://glassdog.com/design-o-rama/index.html
The guy has some great suggestions, pretty good all around knowledge, and his
stuff is available online AND in downloadable versions for printing or ready
reference from the first page. My second and third favorite sites for this
kind of junk are:
http://www.arsdigita.com/books/panda/html.html
http://philip.greenspun.com/wtr/dead-trees/53003.htm
from "How to be a Web Whore Just Like Me" at:

Greenspun is not necessarily correct, but its a good reminder to keep things
within reason. You can certainly target a graphics interested audience, just
realize that you may be leaving some browsers behind. As bandwidth, speed,
monitor size, etc. increase -- the web will be more like interactive TV or a
very fancy art magazine. Graphics WILL matter, eventually. But for now, keep
it in check...
I happen to be doing some strange Flash stuff for a Lego website of my own,
but I realize that certain people will get left behind with this. At the same
time I plan to implement a browser version sniffer AND a simple link that
allows a person to skip the fancy Flash intro. If I were to bother sending
the site to a search engine, I would send it to the first meaningful text
content page and not necessarily the one with the Flash content. At this time
its probably best to stick with some kind of text navigation device over
something like a Flash navigation GUI. But someday...

| (...) Honestly I don't know exactly what you mean but if you want a menubar on one side and the content on the other without frames I suggest using something like this: <table width=100%> <tr> <td> MENU ITEMS </td> </tr> <tr> <td> PAGE CONTENT </td> (...)
