For most countries' fleets/ships/captains the whole point of shooting at an opposing ship was to disable it, board it and force the crew (or what was left of them) to surrender. (...) Well, no. Dismasting a ship was probably the easiest way - the opposing ship couldn't manuever to make an effective broadside while you can. You don't do that with grapeshot.
