1.) I've noted no real hard rules for merchant ships in the rules.

Nope. No real hard and fast rules. In a campaign game, I occaisionally (like
less than once per game) sail a ship out that perhaps doesn't have a full
complement of cannon, and has a light crew.

2.) Do ship models really have to be able to hold the cargo they carry?

No, but I do require players put all their chests on the ship. I've actually
never used any of the cargoes like lumber.

3.) Does anyone have a picture of mast island? I want to see what other • people's
look like.

When I remember, I make a big tall mast. When I forget, I attach a small
mast to the tallest centrally located island.

4.) What is the Excalibur? I've seen it mentioned in the rules, but not • defined.
A ship I take it.

Hmm, don't remember on this one.

5.) Any suggestions on fitting pirates on ships. I notice the small ships • are
pretty hard to fit a sizable crew on.

Make sure your ships have plenty of studs. I have been rebuilding older
ships to have studs up spars to help. Pirates can also cling to the rigging.
I've yet to see anyone have a real problem (other than being exceedingly
clumsy).
