Hi folks!

Well, it has certainly been a while. (Four years, to be precise.)

Yesterday, I landed in Boston for a one-month visit to the East Coast. This (following ten amazing days in Holland) is to celebrate my Masters graduation (with honors, yay me!). Before I dive into the corporate world (and hopefully not belly-flop), I’m taking a well-earned break from everything work-related.

While home-base is generally Boston, I am not confined to there. I will be visiting other locations in and around the East Coast. Certain locations are Philadelphia (date uncertain) and Virginia + D.C. (25th of July til August 4th). New York (both City and State) are likely but not certain. Other destinations along the coast are optional. I intend to rent a car and I’m good to drive far. I will be flying back from D.C. on August 4th.

Of course, classically, I’m missing the big fests, but hey, what can you do - my best friend is getting married on August 6th. Wouldn’t miss it for the world (even if it were a model built of bricks).

I will be glad to meet anyone who wants to do so, especially in these areas but also other areas along the coast - like I said - are potentially good. If you want me to come see you somewhere else, that I haven’t listed - I’ll be happy to come if you can provide me with lodgings.

As you might expect, I have been quite neglecting Lego, but that is easily remedied in the USA.

I am available at the coveted firstname.lastname at gmail. grin

Glad to be here, -Shiri

Welcome back Shiri!

Hope now that you completed grad school, you can get out of your dark ages!

I had mine from 2001-2004. But never again!

Unfortunately since you left, there has been a Diaspora of Lego groups leaving Lugnet.... the classic space and castle folks went of to different websites. The Brit’s Aussie’s and Germans went their own way as well, as did other groups.

Unfortunately although Lugnet is a shell of its’ former self, (Todd & Suz are no longer in charge) we still have the Train and Town folks, as well as the Canadians, Italians, Portuguese, and many others.

And there have been major reshuffling at TLG, with KKK stepping down. The new Chairman has recently announced huge downsizing in Enfield as well as Billund.

Things are not all that rosey as of late.

Are you planning on moving back the the USA from Israel? Or are you staying there.

Glad to hear from a voice from the past!

Hi Shiri . It looks like you will be in the DC region in time for Wamalug’s monthly dinner. It is the last Wednesday of every month. It would be great if you could join us.

Yay Wamalug! I hope I can make it. Like I told you by email, Fradel, I would love to come and will try to arrange the schedule so as to fit this in. (In Virginia I’m dependent on my family members who I’m traveling with.)

More details about where, when, and also who is coming will be greatly appreciated! I’d love to see the old crowd again, so please give a shout if you’re attending this.

Hello Shiri,

Nice to hear from you, and congrats on graduating!

The Wamalug dinner will be somewhere very close to a Metro stop, probably in Clarendon, very close to where BrickFest has been in the past. Hope to see you then!

cheers

Magnus

I’m not so sure I’d be so pessimistic about the overall state of affairs for the AFOL community. Some pretty baddish stuff happened, and lots of stuff has changed, but the future holds lots of potential.

After putting in many years of service to the community, Todd and Suz have stepped down, and it seems to me the new management is patching up leaks and polishing things up. I was unable to post for quite a while for reasons which remain mysterious to me, but in the last month or so I discovered that this was no longer the case and I’ve been trying to make up for lost time.

So yes, Lugnet has lost many of its regular posters to various niche websites, but I get the impression there is more activity here these days than there may have been a year a go or so.

TLG are also shaking things up a lot, and inevitably the much needed reforms have left a lot of employees in a bad spot. On the bright side, the last few years have witnessed TLG’s increased interest in the AFOL community and they have demonstrated in a variety of ways that they welcome our input when it comes to product design and more. Whether as a result of this or not, it also seems to me that the new sets coming out recently have been a little better overall. The Creator sets keep getting better every year, the current SW sets are some of the best ever, and even fallen angel that is the Castle theme is a smidgen better now than it was 2 years ago.

So to quote old Bobby D., the times, they are a-changin’, but I envision the next couple of years for TLG as ones with great potential, rather than dominated by cross-the-board juniorization and shades of bley. Shiri and anyone else who might want to return to the hobby could find worse times than 2006 to get back into the way of the brick.

:)

Hello Shiri,

Glad to hear from you again, do you still write beautyfull poetry? Your “previous” stuff was pretty good and a pleasure to read, in my opinion.

Ten amazing days in Holland... As a born and bread Amsterdam resident i’m curious what you’ve seen and done. Would you allow to share your adventures with us (at least partual, prehaps)?

With friendly greetings, M. Moolhuysen.

The who and where are usually up in the air until a day or so beforehand (we have to vary our routine to stay one step ahead of the local MegaBlok faction) but the when is fairly standard--this month it will be July 26th, a Wednesday, and people show up on one side or the other of 6PM.

Actually, I suppose the where has become standard, as well; we’ve basically made Clarendon Grill (a two minute walk from the Clarendon Metro) our standard location. The who will be about a dozen or so people from the club.

It would be great to have you join us!

Derek

Huh ? The Australians went where ? We’re still here just quieter. There has been difficulties with newbies posting on lugnet generally. Apart from the Australian train groups there have probably been less Australian get-togethers to talk about. We lost Mel to Germany as well.

Don’t forget Kerry’s self-imposed building exile. I’m sure that hasn’t helped ;)

Hiya, welcome back.

Sadly, I won't be anywhere near the East coast during your stay.

Thanks Magnus and Derek for your responses. I’ll be thrilled to join you for your dinner.
However, as things currently stand, I will be in the Baltimore area on Wednesday, and arriving (ironically) to GMU on Friday morning for a while.

Are there any members driving down from Baltimore or nearby? If so I would love to come down with them.
Otherwise, I might still be able to make it, but not necessarily...

Thanks!

Hi Manfred,

I had a great time in Holland - a great place for art fans, plus my boyfriend and I rode bicycles down to Den Haag (the Hague). That was physically strenuous but very, very fun. We saw Haarlem and the beach city next to it (Zanhoorf? Zanfort? can’t recall right now). As for the art fan in me - I am certainly getting my fill on this trip: Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Mauritshuis and M.C. Escher in Den Haag, then MoMA and the Met in NYC, and yesterday the Philadelphia Art Museum (AKA the Rocky steps). Hope to see the Boston MFA before I leave as well and maybe the National Gallery in DC. Amazing.

I didn’t realize you lived in Amsterdam, or I would’ve looked you up!

Howdy folks,

Here I am again. That pesky old-timer who refuses to go away while refusing to actually do anything lego-related!

No, that’s a lie, I actually built a MOC last year. Never got around to posting about it, ergo, it never existed.

So, what am I doing here again?

Easy answer: coming to the East Coast!

OK, I had a short visit last year in which I got to see Tim (yay Tim, you rock for making it up to Boston!) but different constraints meant I saw zilch else (I was partly working, traveling with BF, etc.).

This time, I’m coming for another visit and a bit less constrained.

My schedule... <drumroll please>
  • Land in NYC Jan 26th, fly to Boston next day.

  • Jan 27th to Feb 3rd - Boston, MA.

  • Feb 4th to 9th - flexible, planned destinations NYC and Philadelphia.

  • D.C. potentially still possible between those dates.

  • Fly back from NYC Feb 9th.
So, if you care and my schedule fits yours, drop me a line. I am still available by email, as below:

Glad to be here, -Shiri
