Are all files here PNG? If some are PNG and some are GIF it will make my life
really funny.

All the parts images are PNG.  I can't speak to the actual format of any other
image files on lugnet.

Why are these files .gif if they should be PNG?

Because the compiled data for Partsref includes the image filenames.
Originally, these files were GIFs.  But Partsref is out-of-date, the webpages
and search index are not being updated.

By general opinion, there is value in keeping the part-images updated, even if
the Partsref website isn't fixed.  So Dan Boger set up a behind-the-scenes link
for Lugnet to use Peeron/LDraw parts images.  Those images are stored in PNG
format.

The system lies and says the images are GIF so that the Partsref web pages won't
break.

Hi all! I started working with this and got a surprice. For the project below I intend to use: (URL) I picked (URL) for a test I downloaded the file and tried to view it - illegal gif file - a close view showed that the file is a PNG file not a GIF (...)
