The next SMART meeting is going to be November 19th, at Digipen. Our
mini-challenge will be Crevice Crossing, but as always you are welcome to bring

Crevice Crossing:

Build a robot that can cross a gap between two tables. Initially your robot
should be able to fit in a one-foot cube. See how big a gap you can cross. Try
not to leave anything behind. For extra bonus, cross back to the starting table
after reaching the far side.

As with all mini-challenges, the goal is to challenge yourself as much as you
can. The point behind this challenge is to see how big a gap YOU can cross! If
you are able to build a vehicle that can drive over a four inch gap, then do
that. See if you can get it to return safely after crossing over once. For a
more difficult challenge, attempt a gap that is on the order of one foot! Or
even more difficult, try for a two-foot gap! Perhaps you could try to think of a
way to cross a distance even larger than that?

Just a little under two weeks to try to cross the largest gap you can with a
robot. If some of you haven't attempted a mini-challenge before, the main
objective is to learn. Tackle as much of the task as you feel you are able to;
you don't need to do every last suggestion. The only part of the mini-challenge
you really need to focus on is crossing as big a gap as you can manage. You
don't have to make your robot come back if you don't want to, you don't have to
worry about the suggestion to not leave anything behind, and you certainly don't
have to aim for a two-foot (or larger!) gap.

We try to provide a range of options with every mini-challenge, so that a
beginner with Mindstorms will be able to challenge themselves, and learn, but
also so that an advance builder will be still be challenged and have an
opportunity to try new things that he's never tried before.

We encourage everyone to bring a robot to the meeting, even if it's not working.
You can share what your idea was, and perhaps someone will have a suggestion or
two that would help you get it to work. And more than likely your idea will have
been different than anyone else's, so everyone will learn a new way of
attempting the problem, and perhaps be inspired in some future robot of theirs.

Have fun! We'll see you on the 19th!
