Thanks for following up on this, Bert. At this point it's probably better
that we not commit to something this year. I think we need some more time
for us to work out the logistics of a good set-up (tables being one of the
first things on the agenda) so that when we do eventually do a Train/Town
display it doesn't come off as half-a**ed. I realize that our first
displays will only be the beginning of bigger and better things to come but
I don't want to start out looking like a joke to the other "real" train
groups (i.e. non-LEGO clubs).
I'm wondering if the Ashland group is the yearly sponsor of the Science
Museum show - if so maybe we should at least contact them and introduce
ourselves so that they know of our interest in participating in future
events (I think they have train shows occasionally at the Aviation Museum at
the airport also). Maybe when we do something like the proposed library
event we could invite them out to see what we have to offer.
Another idea we might consider is doing something with TRU. I know some of
the other LUG's have had displays at their local stores - once again though
we need to be organized and ready for such an event before we make a pitch
to them.
I also wonder if any of the local malls would let us do a weekend display.
I know that typically these setups in the mall are for vendors (old comics,
baseball cards, posters etc.) and so I assume there's some kind of fee
involved but perhaps for a non-profit, hobby group they'd allow a pure
display just for the fun of it. I volunteer to try and do some research on
this angle.
Meanwhile - I want to continue to pursue the library/spring break event.
Since we already have a relationship with those folks and they're really
into the idea I think we should concentrate on that and make it a BIG
wing-ding. That will give us the chance to work out some kinks in a
friendly environment. Also I think once we start working on this that
Spring will be here before we know it. I know I have several building
projects I want to complete to go into our eventual town display. These
will keep me busy for a few months.
By the way - I don't know if everyone heard me babbling about it at the last
meeting over in the corner (can't remember who I was talking to but I'm
pretty sure it wasn't just myself - at least this time) but I'd like to have
our display called "Brickmond". I think this is a perfect name for our
"town" - but I'm open to discussion on the topic.
See you guys on the 1st.
