It is topical because it is exactly the core of the discussion- that, IMHO,
NELUG was started as a group for ADULTS.

I honestly get the impression that this is what is really at the core of the
desires
of the folks who agree with the age restriction.

"We are a bunch of adults who all share an interest in LEGO, and we want to
do activities that adults do (like going out and hoisting a few pints) without
having to worry about watching our language because we're interacting with
kids, or getting their parents upset because we're exposing them to strange,
new, and different ideas."

Is this accurate?  There is *absolutely NO shame* if it is, but it should be
laid
out on the table openly, rather than being hidden behind other reasons.

I would like to start by saying that I do not speak for all the members of
NELUG in any way on this, but:

Yes, this is why I feel the way I do.  I make no bones about it, nor do I
attempt to hide behind other things.  I have never said that the 18 year old
age limit is what it is because of liability or anything else.

Your above encapsulation isn't really exact, though.  I also feel that I have
more in common with adults (being one myself) and would rather be in a social
group with them.  I would rather see MOCs built by them and discuss the
building techniques used with them.  Don't get me wrong, I do love seeing the
creations kids build, but have no interest in spending as much time looking at
or discussing them- and by the same token, would rather not see their feelings
get trampled.

Could this same freedom be kept in a way that also allows under-18s into the
group for appropriate activities (like the window displays at TCS)?  Would the
occasional "NELUG over-18 night" or "over-21 night" satisfy, or do all of the
meetings and functions need to be 18+?

If NELUG were a more active club, probably it would.  Right now, though, we get
together about once every six weeks/two months.  I frankly wouldn't attend a
meeting heavily laden with kids, and I'd rather see *more* meetings than fewer.

You say that you were attracted to the idea of an adult LUG because it would
'avoid things like this' - I'm not sure what the 'this' you meant was,

The wide crossposting of Shiri's complaint was, IMHO, pretty immature.  I've
said that before.

since
it's
precisely NELUG's position as an adult-only group that caused 'all of this'.

That's pretty faulty logic.  NELUG's policy has caused nothing.  Shiri's post
was her own action, and the rather insulting tones carried on by some of the
respondants were their own actions.
