Tom sent some info (his note, not really mine):
I'll try to clarify some things, as sprinkled below:

The support beam is really a stiffener for the plywood, so it doesn't sag. It's just dumb luck that it doubles as a
handle.

The tables are framed with 1x3 lumber (3/4"x2 1/2") with 3/8" plywood on for the tops. I used 2x2 (1 1/2"x1 1/2") legs
with commercial folding leg brackets. Hinges (cut piano hinges) and plywood (scrap from making the tops) are used to
make the triangular braces for the legs.

> Yes, they are 36" high. I personally like them that high.
(jenn's note: tom also has an ho layout at his house that's shoulder
height to me!!!)

> Just remember that if the tables were 3x3 baseplates, the 36" legs would not fit inside! The legs would have to be less
