Hey guys...

For some time, I've been mildly jealous of clubs that have the members all
build something related and bring them to meetings- take, for example, the
"auto show" at a recent japanese LUG's meeting:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=4531

Would there be any interest from NELUG members in doing something similar at
some of our meetings?

Sure that would be cool, although if we do it I think the catagories should be
broad enough so that large creations are included but not required and small
creations don't look out of place.

The "auto show" was a good idea, and we need more vehicles for the Train
Layout, but like anything I am sure not everyone is interested.  We should make
sure that this type of event is a "side show" so that people arn't scared off
because they didn't build anything.  I know I would never be scared off and
several others wouldn't either but a newbie might be.

Some ideas for themes I could come up with off the top of my head:

"Jetson's type Vehicles"
"Fantasy Space" - Like Star Wars
"Futuristic Space" - Like 2001 or Red Planet.
Train - (Might be limited interest from a group perspective)
Technic/Mechanical
Historical
Monuments

I am sure there are limitless other ideas as well.  I think we should do it
although I can't guarentee my personal perticipation.

I like your Mechanical and Monuments ideas. 'Monuments' is a nice
general term. Reminds me of the art show TLC did with the assignment:
Gateways. It produced a huge variety of things.

Here are a few I thought of over coffee..

- Zoo: normal animals or bizarre creatures, aliens, dino skeletons, etc.
- World's Fair
- Amusement Park or Big Top Circus
- Puzzles (functioning)
- Mosaic tiles (of same size)
- Parade - floats, bands, big balloons
- A Residential Neighborhood - we each get the same size plot for a house.
- Grimm's Fairy Tales
- Micro-scale Sim City - we could document it as aerial views together
- Office cubicles
- Functional Items w/ decor potential- clocks, ashtrays, masks, jewelry
- A Pet (like the Pet Rock) a very general concept

It might be nice to think of the finished pictures together on our
website. Like, what would represent us as a club.. I can't think of
anything that isn't corny.

- Boston landmarks
- Self-portraits (which could mean anything)
- ?

(...) I like the idea of an Amusement park or Big Top. It has something for everyone. Animals, moving rides, buidings/tents, and maybe even a circus train. If the models come out nice, we might be able to use them for the train show. Jonathan D. (23 years ago, 20-May-01, to lugnet.org.us.nelug)
