So I went home Friday and started building... I ended up modelling one after
the train seen here:

I chose this one after deciding on a method for doing the doors (studs
forward w/ plates) and figuring out how much harder it would be to make them
actually have the green stripe on the doors.
And had I any 1x4x3 train windows in WHITE, I would have loved it, but sadly
I had to deal with using the 1x4x3 trans-blue-tinted-thinwall windows found
in the Railway express. I also went with 8-wide after trying several ways to
get the doors to 'hang out' over the edges of the train wheels and still
have the wheels capable of turning and fitting on Lego track.
Anyway, it actually turned out pretty well, the most difficult part of
course being the 'bend' in the middle. The way I worked it is rather odd--
the two halves of the train are actually free to slide out from one another
along smooth bars which connect to the center engine. All together the two
sections can actually slide out about 10 studs apart or so, but are 'pulled'
together with a yellow technic rubber band. That way, when on straight
track, the train halves are together as close as possible, and when turning,
one side can stretch open.
The gaps are 'filled' similarly. Because no lego hinge really worked well
flexing both ways, I again used rubber bands. So there's a 1x8 wall
(actually, most of it is 1x6 so as little is visible as possible when
looking through the windows) which is free to slide back and forth on each
side, and is kept in place when filling the gap by a rubber band attached to
the opposite train half.
The only part left to design is the gaps on the top of the train, but I'm
fairly certain I'll do something similar, attached to the sliding sidewalls,
and topped with tiles... Actually, I take that back-- I have to design the
interior as well :)
The only things I need more of to complete my car are:
-loads of the white 'curved vertically' bricks for the roof (2 more Imperial
Shuttle's will cover that)
-1 1x1 green headlight piece (I have no idea where I got *7* of them and not
*8*-- heck, I don't even know what set they came in, but I'll have to hunt)

Hey, I'd love to get one going that's longer than 1 car... (I made sure the
'connector' in the front would work, although the turning radius seemed a
bit silly looking... the 8-wide method I used makes the car look a bit big
for minifig scale, actually, (somewhere inbetween minifig and technic-fig
I'd guess) but I still rather like it... As soon as I get the roof done I'll
try and post some pictures so you can see how I worked it...
Otherwise, I'm stuck in the office until either tomorrow night or Wednesday
night, since SOMEONE from my department is needed to cover and I was foolish
enough to volunteer... but maybe I'll put up some pictures before this
weekend...
