Hey, all.  There had been question about whether HORC (now Media Max) in
Vestal was still open or not.  I stopped today, and can report that it
definitely is, and they still have the Lego trough.  We got there just
as they were closing, though, so I didn't have much time to sort through
the troughs, unfortunately.  They have less space devoted to Lego, but
still lots there to pick through (there were lots of Homemakers
cupboards from the 70's, looking almost new--I did see those, and
they're still there).  Hours are short, 12-6 Wed. and Thus, 12-8 Fri,
12-5 Saturday (If I remember correctly--I may not).  They're called
Media Max and are located in a small plaza on the Vestal Parkway a bit
west of the WalMart Plaza, on the same side of the street.  The lady
there told me $10/lb and $1 per minifig when I walked in, and then the
guy told me $.50 per part (??), as far as prices go.

Wow...pretty coincidental, because...

Yesterday Peter Jarvis and I spent a nice afternoon trolling for good parts
at MediaMax.  It was my first visit but not my last.  Despite the cramped
space and the overflowing bins to pick through, we both managed to come
away with an excellent haul.  We also saved our cash by bringing some
of our own unwanted Lego parts to trade in.  After my trade-in I only
had to shell out 5 dollars for what I estimate would cost over $100 at
BrickLink prices.

I was not surprised at the quality of the parts (on the poor side) but was
very glad that I had brought along some carboard sorting bins and a stool
to sit on. I would not have lasted very long without either.  We managed
to sift through the entire top-level bins and only the surface of the
lower bins.  Our trade-ins included a large stash of wheels and tyres of
all ages (maybe you saw the old red Train wheels and White 2 x 4 wheel
blocks) and Peter got rid of an entire gallon sized bag of 1 x 1 and
1 x 2 bricks as well as various other unwanted random stuff.

We did not see any homemaker cupboards, so I guess they took those in
trade after we left.  I found no Train parts except 1 window with clear
glass (yeah!) and there were very few minifigs, minifig accessories,
or wheels and tyres.  I was careful about heavier items and managed to
sneak out with some heavier items in my pockets.  The bins contained
quite a bit on non-Lego stuff so I was constantly throwing that junk
and broken Lego into a nearby trash can; the owner was happy to have me
do that, so he said.  Fortunately, the owner and his wife were not too
crabby while we were there.

Weekday hours are noon to 8 PM but they close from 3:30 to 5:00

The owner told us more than once what the terms for Lego are:
"I buy and sell Lego by the pound"
"Wheels and People are $1.00 each, everthing else is $6.00 per pound"

Perhaps the terms of sale are different every day ??

I don't know how the owner would describe his shop, but I consider it a
Pawn Shop.  He is out to make money, so I had to do some negotiating
with my trade-ins to get a decent deal.  Except for all of the Technic
beams and parts I traded in, I was glad to be rid of the rest of my surplus.
Since Peter and I both got a ton of parts we want, we are happy with how
our trade-ins worked to save us money.  But I don't think I could call
it a truly "good" deal.

Peter and I have tenatively scheduled another trip there, but I won't say
when or what parts we are looking for.
