Kathryn is powered by an old 12v motor pulling power from a dummy 9v mechanism
in the tender. The old 12v motors generally run quieter, smoother, slower,
and just look better for steam loks than the 9v ones. The new 9v motors,
however, are relatively easy to remove the motors from (and get the case back
together without too much damage. In rare circumstances (and only for
commonly available elements) I will cut. In this case there is a second
small connector that exits the tender just above the rear coupler pocket.
This allows all the cars on the train to have their lights powered. There is
also a lit red marker lamp on the back of the tender (not visible in the
photo).
Incidently, all three headlamps on the model are lit with 4.5v bulbs (the
realistic operating speed of the locomotive doesn't go over 4.5 volts). The
thin wires drop through holes drilled in the stud tops and then run to the
boiler in the channels underneath the plates. Also, there is a red lamp
behind the firebox in the cab. You should see the looks on the faces of the
children and parents when they see this! They go away realizing that they
don't have to be limited to the sets that Lego sells . . . but can use their
imaginations to build entirely new creations. Then again, many of them do get
a little disapointed when they hear that the 12v motors are no longer sold.
But that's when I tell them to call or write the company. . . yadda, yadda,
yadda.
