| Well technically the eleven Dixie states were Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. | At the start of the war Kentucky sought to remain neutral; in September 1861 Confederate troops invaded Kentucky, leading to Kentuckians enlisting overwhelmingly in the Union cause.
