Dave's notes, or how to have fun with muffinhead....

Hi Everyone,

On Saturday, I drove up to Vancouver BC with Sean Forbes to meet the
fine folks of VLC.

You can see the pictures here:

The day's dramatization follows:

We left Seattle about 9:45am and drove up to the border. We made good
time, traffic was light. The Canadian Border guard lady grilled us a bit.

The difference between your border and mine (U.S./Mexico): They'll let us out,
but won't let us back in.

BGL: So where are you from?

GAMH: I live in Everett, and Sean lives in Monroe (Sean's ID still says
"Bothell" on it, oops!)

BGL: And what will you be doing in Canada?

Another difference....they truly don't care what you'll be doing in Mexico, as
long as no international incidents occur. This is why they won't allow me back
into Mexico. :)

GAMH: We're going to Vancouver to meet with the Vancouver Lego Club
(indicates LEGO MOCs in back seat)

BGL: When's the last time you were in Canada?

GAMH: about 4 years ago (3 for Sean)

15 years, for me.....I WANNA GO TO VANCOUVER!!! WAH!!!! RICKY!!!!

BGL: So how do you know these people if you haven't been to Canada in 4
years?

GAMH: Well you see there's a website called LUGNet blah blah blah etc.

BGL: (eyes glazing) OK, then, welcome to Canada, please pull through.

I suppose Honesty is the Best Policy. :^)

Anyhoo, we drove north, and managed to not find Trans Canada Highway
(because MapQuest is LAME)
Mapquest is not lame. I truly enjoyed my visit to Phoenix, Az en-route to the
last LUGOLA meeting. (Phoenix is only 9 hours out of my way...)

so we ended up traveling west on highway 10.
We then turned north and drove into Vancouver from the wrong side, so we
stopped and picked up a map. About this time I called Robin on his cell
and we managed to get ourselves on the right course.

I pulled up to Dean's apartment complex around 1pm, about the time Robin
was getting out of his car. He showed us in and I proceeded to unload
all my stuff, as did Sean.

Gradually, the other members showed up, (somehow I managed not to get
any photos with Brian Wong or Mark Wilburn) and we all went out to look
for sales. We found 7150 for 50% off at Wal Mart, so about 8 of us
bought the set. We found the AT-ST set at Zellers, where they were
having a BOGO 50% sale, so a few of us bought that one as well.

Ever seen Mystery Men? 'Fury...burning! Rage....rising!' Oh, wait...that must be
the lack of great sales here in Los Angeles...

After spending about 4 hours shopping, we returned to the apartment
complex and about 6 of us parted out our AT-ST sets. Then we had a
"draft", where we drew numbers and went around the table in order, each
person taking a pile of parts until no more piles were left. It was a
fun way for all of us to get parts in multiples, without having to buy a
lot of sets. We repeated the process with the DV TIE/ Y-Wing set. I
thought it was a pretty nice system. Everyone got a couple piles of
parts they could use, and it was fun watching people consider which pile
of parts they wanted more.

Alright...so this is a truly cool idea. I'll give you guys that.

After all of this, Sean and I decided we had to go home, so we left
Vancouver at 9pm. The guard at the USA border checked our IDs, peeked in
the trunk, and waved us through with no trouble at all. I was sort of
surprised at this, considering all the questions we got when entering
Canada.

Again....this wouldn't be possible at the US/Mexico border, even for those of us
that are obviously American. Perhaps I'll enter the country next time speaking
Swedish to see if they'll stop me....

Anyway, it was fun meeting up with the VLC folks, and they said they
would try to come to a SEALUG meeting after the new year. I hope so!

Sounds like a lot of fun! I loved the pictoral, especially the following:

This one begs the question...who's behind the camera?

More than meets the eye!

Hopefully we'll hook up again in February....say the 16th or so. :)

(Who wouldn't leave LUGOLA for the world....well, okay, maybe if I could own my
own Hawaiian island, I'd leave....)
