Thanks Matthias, for your involved answer!
Let's see: I've got the reversing loop working now, but there's
still a question of what "Main" means in terms of "main line"...
My reversing loop will be off my own section of the layout (call
it the 'local') and the 'local' will be off the larger main.
So, by the time the train comes out of the reversing loop, the
local is reversed to handle it, but I need to negotiate with the
grand masters of the One True Mainline in order to get its
polarity reversed - in the meantime, I guess I'll just keep my
points aimed inwards and insulate myself from the Main.

I spent the weekend messing with the gravel pit. Here's what I
came up with:
1) You're right about 'humping' - it's too variable to be effective,
plus it requires solving the challenge of separating cars.
2) You're right about weighing the car - the biggest problem here
actually turned out to be the fact that in my scale the track moves
ever-so-slightly ... but enough to derail a train under the wrong
circumstances.
3) The conveyor was the hardest part - making a jam-free conveyor
is a tough proposition due to the scaling factors in Lego. I think
I've come close, but I need to do some full-up tests to be sure.
4) I'm measuring product on a scale after it is raised by the
conveyor. This scale is relatively lightweight and consequently
friction is less of an issue. Moderate errors in product load
are acceptable as long as the train car gets a respectable load.
5) The scale bin is tipped by a funky little linkage into a trough
which drops the product into a chute that puts it in the car.
6) My Motor/Sensor package is then as follows:
Motors: Track, conveyor, scale tip
Sensors: Scale, track sensor1, track sensor2
This way I can use 2 light sensors to position the train properly,
and with some work I might even be able to tell hopper cars from
engines, etc.
I also need to go around my Lego room and pick up all the 'miss-sorted'
gravel pieces... the last I saw of many of them was an upbound gray
parabolic streak when my various conveyor attempts unjammed violently.

| If you weren't already aware, your reversing loop needs to be electrically isolated from the main line. The idea is that before the train enters the loop, the reversing line is given the same polarity (at it's start) as the main line so the train (...) (24 years ago, 28-Apr-01, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
