I think Chris is right... about 4 complete cycles of a large cylinder is the
best you will get with one air tank. I'm not sure if that doubles with two air
tanks... If you use one of the tiny cylinders, it lasts *forever*. I guess you
need as much travel as possible for this to be useful.

I ask because I wouldn't mind trying to build an Airservo with a greyscale
encoder/lightsensor (or just use a rotation sensor...) on the piston, and a
high-speed home-made proportional valve.

This sounds really cool. What do you mean by home made proportional valve? I
would like one of those to play with...

Does this sound viable? I don't have an air tank, but I'd probably order one
of those dandy little kits every one is takling about (provided I maintain
interest in trying this). :)

You should just use a plastic water bottle in the mean time. Thats what I did
before I got the Lego air tanks. Sure it doesn't look cool, but it holds a lot
more air!
