I ended up watching "Robotica" on TLC last night. There were two back to
back episodes. It was on, so I thought to myself "Why not just watch one
time, and see what it's all about?"

I have so many mixed feelings. I was chatting with a friend from Texas at
the time (he also has a TV right next to his computer) so it was pretty
funny to laugh together at some of the crazy things that went on. Yeah, I
watched both episodes. No, I'm not really impressed. Well, maybe a little.
So it was funny.

It's really sad that all people seem to be interested in now is "Yay, lets
smash crap up." Our competitions could *never* go on air - the type of
people who watch "Robotica" are probably the same kinds that enjoy TV-style
WWF Wrestling*.

The things on this show are just big remote controlled cars. With blades.
And spikes.

And flame throwers.

That's not appropriate. Holey crap. :) Espically when they're always saying
"Oh, I love robotics." "I'm a robot builder!" "This robot will help find a
cure for cancer!" "We can use this robot for sprue removal!"

(Ok, so I made the last one up. I'm not really bitter.)

I think I WILL watch the show again, though - because it was all too
hilarious to watch the goofy designs fail. There was this one... and I hate
to type the name coughidroidcough that almost TIPPED OVER FORWARD when going
over this tippy ramp. I totally lost it. It was just SO HILARIOUS. It was
also pretty funny how the drives work on these things - it doesn't seem like
anyone has mastered any sort of coherent steering mechanism/logic. They're
bashing into things, steering all over the place... hello, Omnidrive anyone?
:)

So yeah. Robotica is to robotics what WWF is to... um... well, yeah. The
pine tree outside my window. I don't know. I'm tired.

THIRTY ONE HOURS NINETEEN MINUTES 23 SECONDS
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FLIGHT OF FEAR HERE I
COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(...) I wouldn't say that, I saw a Discovery Channel news bit about the Canada FIRST competition and it was really cool. There was no smashing up at all. But you're probably right in the sense that we'll never draw the WWF crowd. And maybe that's a (...) (24 years ago, 13-Apr-01, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
