I wanted to update my storage/shipping/display methods to cover the following--
1 - (and the most important) Quick setup time at shows.
As we found out with multiple brickfetes, the OBB CSL was the longest setup time
out of all other displays, even though it wasn't the biggest.
This was one of the biggest reasons why I stopped doing shows. The time it
takes to set this up makes me not want to set it up.
2 - Keeping it together
I kept on opening the cardboard boxes and finding a mess of bricks at the
bottom, instead of my wonderful MOC. As these builds are pretty big, there is
always a higher chance of disintegration due to shipping and knocking the boxes
around.
3 - wiring like the train displays we always see at our shows
To wire the layout to the extent I want to, I have to get away from breaking the
layout down to baseplates. Having the baseplates 'joined' on a flat board,
wiring can be done better, safer, and more permanent (and this also factors into
point 1--I timed the setup and found that the biggest time for setup was putting
out all the baseplates and then comes the train/monorail track)
4 - bringing my own structure to display the layout
Historically, the tables provided by shows I've attended are from rentals. As
such, they're not level or secure across tables. The best displays I've done
were at brickfete, because I got to setup on permanent or temporary stages that
were flat and true across the entire layout. Also, I don't want to depend on
the show organisers for anything beyond a space to display my layout. I can
then do more variety of shows, including outdoor.
5 - I love working with wood (as well as lego)
And combining the two is great. Though, to be said, using my old Craftsman saws
in winter isn't necessarily the best for this as my hands get cold, but I was
lazy this last summer and didn't do it then.
When the storage containers are done, and when the baseplates are all 'tied
down' on their specific modules, and the layout can be contained in all the
boxes, I can then focus on adding detail, lighting and automation, because then
the these won't get busted in shipping and storage. Many times previously I've
built a really cool RCX controlled 'whatever' just to spend the show rebuilding
it because of shifting or breaking during transport. Grrr!!!
I've also wanted to keep the boxes as inexpensive as possible without going back
to cardboard. Each box is just under 50 dollars completed. That's still a
little steep for me, but 6 boxes? I'll live with it for now. If I expand the
layout, though, I may have to revisit that. As it is, I'm not going to increase
the square footage of the layout for a bit and just work on making the existing
space better.
I did keep as close as possible to the old standard train module--3 32x32
baseplates by 3 32x32 baseplates. I modified to the extent that 2.5 feet by 2.5
feet is very hard to transport whilst keeping the modules horizontally with a
build on top of it. So I went with 2 baseplates by 3 baseplates. These 'mini'
modules slide into a transport box.
I'm getting close to a show where I'm setting all this up for the first time.
I'm sure there's a myriad of points and issues that I haven't thought of, but I
think this is a good start. One thing I will modify right after the show is
incorporating a 'power centre' into one of my boxes so I can just plug the
controllers/lighting wires right into the box instead of setting those up at the
show. I don't have time for that right now, but should have that after the
show.
Anywho, that's where we are today.
I'll update as we go thru with this.
