Hey folks,

What a productive day:  Iain came by, we built him three modules together,
and finished my fifth and sixth modules.  Anyways, afterwords, I figured out
HOW TO MAKE FUNNEL CAKES:

It's not hard at all.  They're delicious and easy to make-I did about 95% of
it-about as easy as making PNLTC modules.  About the only difficult part was
the deep frying, but with help from my mother (Chinese cuisine has a lot of
hot oil cooking), we got that down fine.  Anyways Chris, you missed out :)

Also today I spoke with my coworker about the ongoing DCC project.  The overall
strategy is to scratchbuild the encoder and decoder and have a toggle on
the decoder to disable the DCC and make it work like a normal 9V motor.  The
initial decoder centers around a design out there on the Internet, though
we're modding it and using a German train club's modifications to fit it to
throughhole PCB building-ie, using a DIP socket PIC instead of an J leg SMT
one.  The result is that the decoder is gonna be a lot larger than easily
fit into the train motor, so it'll need to have an extra 2x6 tethered along
for the first few ones we make.

To get it into an integral 9V pack, it'll need to be SMT'd AND will require
custom board etching with a lot of precision.  Unfortunately, we don't have
easy or moral access to SMT soldering hardware, it'll have to be outboard
for now.  The good news is that the raw part cost will be somewhere near $15
each instead of $30-50 for a commercial N scale DCC decoder.

Of course, people could still buy a DN140 and use that, obviously some
models can't handle an extra tethered DCC box (ie, Iain's A7 NQT), but the
Metroliner will definetly work, as will my blue diesel.  I suspect many
other models will too.

We've sourced the 16C84 PICs in Toronto (the hardest part to find, the rest
is all generic components available anywhere), but only the 20 MHz variants.
I'm mailing the guys who did the mods to see if that's an acceptable
replacement. We've also got access to PIC programming hardware too.
Hopefully we'll have some progress to report this week.

Calum

<snip> (...) nice...Iain (Tony) said he came by last night when we chatted on AIM.... sounds like he is real excited that his modules are built....I soo can't wait to see his "stuff".... Which brings me to the question, "Hey Calum, are you going to (...) (23 years ago, 9-Jul-01, to lugnet.org.ca.rtltoronto)
