I say this is CLEARLY not allowed.

I would say that would be true, regardless of the fact my name has been used in
libellous* example here.

* hey, would you believe a synonym of libellous is calumniatory?

2.  At the whistle blow, most people press the RUN button on the RCX, or
will use a remote to fire commands to separate RCXen to start the robot.

I say this is allowed.

That's a litttle tougher, because a Program Start Command (eg, whatever the P1
button fires) may be misinterpreted by another robot.  But yes, that is a valid
starting method.

3.  We have in the past, seen NON rcx based robots be started with the
flick of a polarity switch.

I say this is allowed.

(now it gets tricky)

Sounds good to me.  Unless it's Jeff Elliott.  He and his nonRCX-ish ways can
bite me.

4. what if I built a clockwork spring powered robot. What if the spring
was so tough that only a human could "pull the pin" to start it. What if
I attached the spring trigger to a polarity switch, so that to START the
robot I would flick the polarity switch AND AT THE SAME TIME, move the
spring trigger that is attached to the polarity switch.

Okay with me too.  As long as the human movement doesn't push the robot around
physically (eg, impart a force to it) OR impart kinetic energy to it.  It's okay
to prewind a spring or coil, but not to smack it across the table say in a drag
race.

I dont know if this breaks the spirit of the game.... or is that
"pulling a hassenplug?"

SBFO is my new term for things that "pull a Hassenplug".  Should Be Fervently
Obvious.  SBFO was always the point of the gentleman's agreement.  We try not to
address SBFO, because then it becomes too American.

Have we ever discussed "spirit of the game" rule definitions? At what point do we refer to a human action taking place over a robot action -- specifically referring to the STARTING of a robot at the beginning of a game. Example: 1. While sumo robot (...)
