I work in a hospital- I asked the same question...
It's more about interference with telemetry than anything else, and it's mostly
older equipment, but since they can't test *every* cell phone, and hospitals are
dealing with high stakes... they take the safe route and ban them all. In my
hospital, the ban is only in Intensive Care units, or within three feet of
equipment, so most people can use their phones without any trouble.
Certain equipment is certified to work without interference- many of the
hospital personnel carry cell phones, and wireless networking is coming to most
hospitals (including mine) too.
