Good to hear - remember your family is more important than any amount
of LEGO.  Spend time with them rather than us whenver they want to.
That said, have you mentioned the Feb.17&18 2001 Calgary show?
I was thinking that if you couldn't make it, and they wanted a LEGO
train display enough to provide the table space, I could stay with my
sister (who lives down there) and perhaps borrow some of your trains
and buildings.  I couldn't fit all of it into my Honda, and certainly
not the tables, but certainly enough LEGO for a great display.
I've already e-mailed Barry Conn about it, and included a few links.
His reply:
Hi Steve.  Thanks for the information and the great pictures.  If you
are interested in coming to our Model Railroad show (Supertrain 2001),
please send me your name and mailing address.  We can then get you on
our exhibitor mailing list and get an application sent to you.
Then again, perhaps we should wait for awhile with this discussion.

3. More stable and more visible bases for the posts for the rope barriers.

Definitely. Perhaps simply having them higher. A suggestion I heard was
to use barbell weights. A pain to lug around, but less moveable.

Perhaps sandbags could help to keep the bases stationary.

The main problem was that the bases were the same color
(white) as the floor. If they were painted red or something
eye catching (for peripheral vision) that would make a lot of
difference. Sandbags or weights on top would help IF the
poles were more secure. As it is, the poles would just get
pushed over, making things worse. We should also consider
dispensing with the barriers entirely, as many of the other
layouts there had done. If there are no loose items near
the edge (just tracks and buildings) it shouldn't be a major
problem, but the operator would have to keep a closer
eye on trains running on the outside tracks. Also, any high
speed train running would need to stay away from the outer
edges. By the way, the high speed is one of things that
we can do that conventional model trains can't. Given how
popular it is with the crowds - especially the kids - IMO, we
should consider doing more of it than we did. A bullet-train
model (perhaps a variation on the older red one that Michel
has) should be quite "doable". I saw a nice customized
4561 in the photos of one of the other shows. I could make
something like that, or a better version of my high-speed
cargo train.

5. More mechanization, to pique the adult interest.

Shamelessly, I ask: Any room for a Technic crane? :-]
It would only need 3"x3" on a table and would be high enough
not to interfere with anything else.

Now, this is Technic scale of course. The only way that it
would fit is that we have a small area off to one side reserved
for (stationary?) 14-wides. Our own Mr. Eight-wide could build
a bigger red engine. How about it Kevin? :-]

14-wide?  As in 14 studs wide?!?  That's more than double.

I've seen at least one show layout with a skyscraper (including crane)
under construction.  It looked great (as part of other buildings) and
would be a perfect project for John.   :-)
