Yes, I know. Or "loose change" if you prefer. My father, b. 1918,
Gostynin, Poland, grew up while Pilsudski was running things. only boy
in a family of 7. In the resistance, captured and internned by the
Germans, fought fires in Berlin on a work squad, went to U Bonn, came to
the US in 1949 as a DP.
My mother, b. 1922 Chemnitz (nee Karl Marx Stadt, nee Chemnitz) Germany
grew up during the hyperinflation, was in HitlerYouth, lost 3 serious
boyfriends to the Allies, had a brother captured by the russians. He
came back brainwashed, convinced that socialism, USSR style, was a good
idea. Her parents divorced over it. My Gm stayed behind, my Gf moved to
the west. In 1956 my mom, penpals with my dad, escaped the DDR, and came
to the US, married the day she got off the boat.
So ya, I have some history. Makes me pretty staunch anticommunist
antifascist.
