What's your hourly rate of pay?  Add the time it takes you to research
current prices, order parts from different vendors, assemble the box,
tweak the OS, etc. and then where does the price fall?

Well, that's a good point.  I could buy a prebuilt machine that
matches that G3's specs for $1626.  Basically the same machine I just

Wait.  I missed something.  So you can spend $2800 piecing together a
machine comparable to a $3000 Mac, or you can spend $1626 buying it
prebuilt?  The numbers aren't making sense to me.

No, what I meant, even if it didn't come through clearly, was that if
I were to choose to spend $2800 on a computer (which I would not NEED
to do, unless I wanted a true behemoth of a machine) I could put one
together that would outperform, in any way, the $2811 monitor-less G3.

I could buy (prebuilt) a system that matches or exceeds that G3, spec
for spec for $1600.  Maybe the G3 would be faster at some things,
maybe the P3 would be faster at others.  But for $1200 less, I could
get a machine that would be, in most every way, equal to the G3.

Were I to choose to spend $2800, either on a prebuilt or selfbuilt
machine, I can guarantee you the G3 wouldn't touch it, not in
Photoshop or anything else.  Heck, I'm about to put together a dual
550 machine (366's oc'ed to 550) that would probably smoke the G3, and
I won't spend a total of $800 on it, if that much.

Yeah :(  And schools is what I want out of.  So I'm looking at graphics
houses, but they want graphic designers.

I hear you.  I've just taken over administering the labs at UTK.
Luckily, until I get the PCs in shape, I don't have to deal with the
Macs.  By the time I do have to deal with them we'll probably have
phased out even more of them than we have already.  When I came to UTK
I'd say there were 6-10 Macs for every PC.  It's the other way around
now, and getting worse/better.

I know...I guess there are just some of us who click with the MacOS
better than windows.

Not sure why.  I've probably used a Mac longer than most people I
know, having used them from day 1 (our school was a pilot project).
Even today I probably log as many hours on a Mac as many casual users.
They both work - and I don't think I "click" with either platform - I
just use them.

Anyway, I use whatever they put in front of me, I just like Macs better.
(And I don't even think Bill Gates is evil, like many seem to.)

I'm about to pull an old 8500/150 out of storage to use for a while as
a secondary machine.  Very secondary, though.  I'll be using my new P3
most of the time.
