IMHO, if done inline in the text, false positives would look incredibly
sloppy and careless.  However, maybe, just maybe, it might work to put
something off to the side saying (in so many words) "Here are links to
the DB for numbers that -might- be LEGO set numbers.  No guarantees, but
it might save you some keystrokes.  Don't complain if the links don't take
you where you expected to go!"

Here's another idea!
How about using a spacer GIF image as the link?!   8x5 pixels is probably
big enough.
Tell people that they can click on the "space" after a set# to look it up.
You do this for all suspect set#, and users will only click when it makes
sense to them, and they won't be bothered with dozens of false hotlinks.

You can put an option at top of page to display hotlinks as:
- a space after set# (invisible hotlink)
- normal word hotlink
- Sidebar links
- no hotlinks

IMHO the sidebar links would be a cumbersome to use, because now the user
would have to deal with three things:
1. Reading the message
2. Looking for links in the sidebar.  This may be long for auction postings!
Prices and other info would be within the posting, but the links are on
a separate list.
3. The database record

BTW, let me personally thank you for LugNet.  It has become a large part of
my LEGO life (are there any other kind? ;-))

(...) I was contemplating doing something similar a couple weeks ago when MikeS was talking about how much he used the search box... Rather than just giving a link into the DB, it really ought to (if it could) give a thumbnail and the set's data (...)
