Maybe someone can help me decide what to do.... Here's what
happened. Today I was online and one of those quick thunder/lightning
storms came up. I saw a flash of lightning so bright it almost
blinded me through the blinds, and a crack of thunder so loud it hurt.
I think it hit right at the house, because mom says she saw sparks
around the light switch in another room (!) needless to say it
knocked me offline. Now I cannot get a connection over 21600 (56k
modem) and most often I get 12000 or 9600. Even as low as 4800.
None of the connections will hold over a minute. (I usually get
connections at 49200 or 48000)
I just popped in my old 28.8 modem, and I've been on at 24000 for
a good 30 minutes.
Would it be possible the modem is damaged but not so that it is
completely dead but just will not connect at high speeds anymore? Or
could the phone lines be a mess from the storm (there was some serious
wind too) and this old dinosaur modem is capable of handling the noisy
lines better?
Thanks!
Thomas
