I'm currently using Novell's Lan
Workplace Pro which has a very decent X server in the package.
since we're talking about my wife's computer, it has the
LanWorkplacePro installed there...  I tried to use it's X but it
wouldn't actually connect... perhaps I should give it another shot?

I would try to do so.  Mine worked like a champ very first time, though, so I
don't know how great I would be in helping to diagnose your situation.

BTW, the verion I'm using won't tell me a version number (arg >:-P spit fume),
but it was released in 1996.
