Hi:

I just pieced together a new computer from parts at local flea markets

to/adding some type of Linux.

My only previous experiance with UNIX has been with HP-UX at work (a story
youdont want to hear) so I know enough unix to know that I dont know very
much! Anyway I was considering a linux so I could play with perl/databases/etc.

well, I'm biased, but the only dist I've any experience with is
Redhat...  If you have background in unix, you should be fine figuring
out RH...

What distribution of Linux would you recommend?
Is it possible to have both Win98 and linux on the same machine?
Can I do this w/o reinstalling Win98?

definitely possible to have both win98/linux installed on the same comp,
and to do that you have to install win98 first - so you have half the
work done :)  Just make sure you know what space of your drive you want
to allocate for linux, since you'll probably want to reformat that to
ext2 filesystem...

for a good instructions, look here:

or just ask :)
