Perhaps you are thinking of the First and Second Chronicles of Thomas
Covenant, by Stephen R. Donaldson. The character to which you refer is
actually Berek Halfhand, supposedly reincarnated as the main character
(Covenant) who is indeed a leper.
I used to be quite fond of these series, but more and more Im aware of how
shamelessly derivative of Tolkein it is. Thats a shame, too, because
Donaldsons a good writer with a great sense of character evolution.
Specifically, he enjoys creating characters of extremity, whom we are hardly
inclined to like, and then through the course of the stories we are moved--if
not to *like* the character--at least to understand or sympathize with them in
some fashion.
