A good point, though the Borgias kinda skirted that one.  :-)

Kindly note the Dark Ages are held to begin with the fall of (Catholic) Rome
to germanic invaders.  Much knowledge was preserved by Irish Catholic monks.

As well as heretical Arabs, of course.  8^)

Absolutely.

After the Reformation they told their people if they read the Bible they >would go crazy.

Papal eddict?  Local yokels?  What?

Interestingly, there is extant a copy of a letter from around the turn of
the millennium in which a translator expressed his concern that laymen might
misconstrue The Bible's meaning if it were made available in English.
Nothing mentioned about insanity, but that was a long time before The
Reformation, naturally.

The general level of education was so low, yes, there was a fear they
wouldn't understand what they were reading.  But there was also an implied
threat to the priesthood's position as intermediaries between God and the
common man - knowledge is power.  But all that pretty much went out the
window with the printing press and movable type.  There's a Gutenberg just
down the freeway from me.

It's simply not true. True Christianity is that
which reaches out and helps the poor, the widows, the orphans, the
imprisoned, etc.

Good works.  Catholics.

And many atheists and agnostics.

     Dave!

Well, yes, but Catholics were known for their "good works" (and cynical
thoughts) and Protestants were known for their good words and thoughts, but
wouldn't back it up with good deeds.  Each was hypocritical in their own way
at the time and each also had a point, though I think enlightened people
from both sides now understand that and you must match thought and deed to
truly be sincere (though I still hear this stuff from time to time).
