I've been using AOL since '94, and I only recently started getting spam, and it
is no more than once a week.  Of course, all I use it for now is e-mail.  ;)

I imagine it is related to AOL's takeover?
I used AOL for a month's free trial a couple of years back,
and received internal spam quite regularly.

There is absolutely no reason for AOL to be against spamming, for several
reasons:

1: The income they get from selling names to mailing lists is formidable.

2: The exposure advertisers get with AOL's captive audience is formidable.

3: The volume of spams which originate from or seem to originate from their
site does little to decrease new customer signups.

4: The volume of spams coming in to their site is to be fought -- but as a
businessperson would fight a competitor.

5: The average AOL customer doesn't understand the implications of anti-spam
arguments, so in their sheeplike way they allow it to continue.

No, AOL is not in the business of stopping spam.

Just my .02 kopek.
