There is no such thing as natural purpose. Intelligences are the only things
with purpose, and evolution worked the way it did by a set of mostly understood
general principles, but there is no directive hand pushing things along.

In a genetic sense, no. In a psychological sense, yes.

I think the case of these people is actually tougher. It may be easier if
they've left instructions. If so, we follow them. If not, at least to some
extent they have earned a place in society that fetuses have not through
expressiveness. Ultimately, I think that if there is a reasonable chance that
they will revive, they still get their rights. If not, we might go ahead and
unplug them and let them die fully.

Agreed, but first, what is human? And if you support the selective removal of
rights (and you do), then you have affirmed that it is society's place to
decide which people get rights.
