In Australia, the number of newly infected has actually levelled out.
Not sure if it was the education campaign that was aimed at the general
population on prime-time TV here in the mid-eighties.

There are lots of factors here, from the sexual revolution to increased
tourism and travel to third world-first world migration, increased use of
antibiotics etc. and the greater number of short-term sexual pairings.
If you want to really get worried, think about mosquito-borne diseases, in a
world that is slowly warming, these are the growing concerns.
An insect-borne disease is much more of a problem than a sexually-transmitted
one, not to mention our growing reliance on an ever lessening number of
antibiotics.

But it's more than just surviving as a generation.
That generation has to reproduce at a higher rate than sheer replacement.
Places like Africa will always be able to steamroll a pandemic like AIDS thru
the shear weight of birthrate.
