50% seems awfully high.  I supose it depends partly on what you consider
"modest", and whether or not you've mouths to feed.

Modest varies a lot depending on what part of the industry you're in, but I
had to climb well above modest (IMHO) to reach 50% tax on that survey.

True, as a recent mobile graduate entering the computer software industry with
long hair, and from looking at some of the 500 daily jobs in news://tor.jobs
$50k CAD seems like a modest figure.. and it isn't too far off comparative
wages in the UK.

Taking a $50,000 yearly income:
$24,117 goes to the Ontario Government
Which means I work 177 days for the gov, 188 days for my LEGO :)

So that's really 48% tax I guess..

Beyond that, umm, Canada manages their money about as badly as most
governments, and national health care is expensive.

The UK has national health too.. but last year I was paying less than %20 tax,
with a similar wage on that calculator I'd be paying 44% tax!

There are worse problems to have than paying taxes.  (depending how
emphatically libertarian portions of the audience are, that may be a troll)

I agree, and I totally don't mind paying taxes to help keep Canada spiffy! It's
just that if everything works out I'll be using my year in Canada to save up
for residency, and if I'm paying anything like 48% tax then I might not be able
to save that much :)

Richard, you need to be sure you're comparing apples with apples. If you scroll down in that Fraser Institute tax calc page you'll find this: (...) So you are not just looking at income tax here, and to truly compare with the UK you'll need to add (...) (24 years ago, 3-May-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
