I somehow feel obligated to chime on this topic.  I too am a "Mormon" and am
never surprised at the level of ignorance that often surfaces as evidenced on
slashdot.  Generally speaking, most "Mormons" have pretty thick skin when it
comes to criticism concerning our church; heck, we are still the only religion
to ever be kicked out of the United States.  Walk into almost any Christian
bookstore and you will find literature condemning our religion.  In spite of
all this there are some important issues here.

First off, the issue of internet filtering is not unique to Utah, or to our
church.  This issue is raging here in California as well as in other states.
The basic argument of free speech is a silly one.  If I walked into my local
library, I guarantee you I would not be able to find Playboy or Penthouse in
the magazine section.  If the library even carries these publications they
would be behind the counter given only to adults. (much to my frustration in
high school)  Why should the internet be any different?  Why not set up a
password on the filtering software so if adults want to download porn they can
do so, but minors will be unable to.

Second issue is that of the political power of the church in Utah.  No one can
deny that the "Mormon" influence in Utah is strong enough to accomplish
anything they desired politically.  However, with few exceptions, the church
steers clear of political matters, preferring to "teach good principles" and
having the people "govern themselves."  Yes, the moral majority in Utah is
banding together to affect positive change, but is there anything wrong with
that?  If an individual prefers to live in a society where pornography is much
more accessible, he should move out of Utah. (Las Vegas would be a much better
location)

Just my two cents
Scott

Arg. I gotta vent. Slashdot is carrying an article (1) on how the Utah legislature is trying to enfore internet filtering in public libraries. Somehow, this topic has become a Mormon-bashing extravaganza. I was going to post there, but I suspect (...) (25 years ago, 1-Mar-00, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
