Oh. Well, I'd say then that most governments today ARE evil. Further,
many corporations of today are as well. Jasper's putting words in my
mouth when he alleges that I somehow think all corporations are good, if
that's what he said (maybe not, but I read it that way). But I think
libertopian corporations will have LESS power than the corporations of
today do, rather than more.
The biggest reason for that belief is right back to the personal
responsibility thing. It takes a pretty big chunk of your budget to
carry enough liability insurance to cover practically unlimited
liability.
For example, the US government decided to specifically exempt
corporations from any and all liability for mishandling nuclear waste.
This was done back in the fifties under the aegis of the NRC in order to
"foster the growth of nuclear power for the generation of electricity".
Such a waiver of liability would never happen in Libertopia, as it would
be unconstitutional.
That liability is a huge check against unlimited corporate growth.
Now, would people still be evil in Libertopia? Yes, some would. Would
companies? Yes, some would. But stronger accountability seems to me to
limit the damage that can be caused. Not eliminate it, nothing's
perfect, there is NO UTOPIA... but lessen it.
People who are bad (and there are some no matter what, no matter how you
organize your society, although I allege some societal organisations
foster evil and some foster goodness among the "undecided" of the
population) will try to do bad things. In a free and open society (and,
I might add, a well armed one) those bad things tend to be smaller in
scope because you can't get away with as much for as long.
If you disagree, well, I don't know what to say.
