I know how important it is for many people to have no studs showing on
anything they build, but that being said and since this is just my opinion,
please take it for what it is worth, I personally do not see the need to
cover every little stud when building something. I just think that going
studless has become a little cultish and cliquish.
But again, I understand that some people love this method and I guess are
trying to downplay the fact that LEGO is a toy. We are playing with LEGO
every time we build something. It is not really a serious fine art medium
such as oil painting or fine woodworking. I guess that I just cant get
those thoughts out of my head.
The other thing that seems interesting to me is that so many sets produced by
TLG have studs all over them. Heck, maybe they should release a set that
contains only tiles and the builder has to use glue to put it together! lol

First of all, clearly not the answer he was looking for. Second, SNOT is not so
much about producing a smooth-surfaced model as it is about allowing you to
build in any direction. Take, for instance, my
Nerd Herd car. The
bulk of the design is studs-up, but the front and rear ends are built
studs-outward because it allowed me to include significantly more detail than if
Id just built the entire thing studs-up. And for the record, thats a trick
that even official LEGO models have been utilizing, such as most 6-wide or wider
vehicles, especially trucks and industrial vehicles.
Its not about recognizing that its primarily intended to be a toy. Its about
recognizing that you dont have to be constrained by that intent, or by whatever
techniques the official designers can come up with.

| Good reply! I was gonna post this, it's pretty much what you said... Well let's not turn this into a big philosophical discussion here, but SNOT has *many* building benefits, only one of which is hiding studs. It also lets you create unusual shapes (...)
