What saved Reagan was the division of powers in the senate and congress. As
well, the 'rise' of mediocrity of the Rush's and the Hannity's that push this
completely misnamed 'compassionate conservative' hadn't happened yet.
Bush had a completely unified federal government--senate, congress, executive,
and some might add supreme court, and look at what happened?
Just by looking at it now, it wasn't Reagan's era that personified the
conservative movement--it is Bush II, and the havoc that has ensued from a pure
conservative mismanagement.
The 'damaged' list is absolutely extensive, both inside your country and
throughout the world. But that's the way conservatives *want* it. So when
someone else comes into power, they can yell and scream about the damage that
has been done (and they won't mention the ones who perpetrated these disasters),
or they'll yell and rant about how little the non-conservatives are doing about
it.
It's all smoke and mirrors to the cons. It's lying--Delay can't even read his
own words from his own book right on television without lying about it--and
that's insignificant compared to everything else that has transpired over the
past 6 years.
The sheer volume of '-gates' (something I'm increasingly annoyed with--'Oh look,
the president has a booger in his nose--it's 'Tissue-Gate!!') recently speaks
louder.
No John, I'm dreadfully sorry--history may look kindly on some presidents, but
20 years from now it'll be extremely difficult to point to *anything* that GWB
did whilst reigning in power that was good and just.
I use the example of Carter right now--over 20 years later. A president that
always tried to do the right thing but history doesn't like him so much.
