But theres a difference between some extremists committing violence and a crowd of 15,000 attacking an embassy because a government won’t silence and punish a newspaper for exercising their right to satire. That is what sets this a part from every other act of violence you listed: the totally surreal justification for it.

Like thousands rioting in LA because a court ruling didn’t go the way they wanted? I seem to recall about 50 killed, was that justified? Mob rule can do some strange things to people.

Fair enough - that was a pretty lame reason to riot. I remember my High School shutting off access to cable and radio when the verdict was read during the OJ Simpson trial in case there was problems. Pretty lame and unjustified if you ask me.

The trial of the officers who beat Rodney King (I have no idea why you are referencing the O.J. Simpson trial) was such a farce that feds brought them up on federal charges (and ran a competent trial) as fast as they could.

I mentioned the OJ Simpson trial because my school shut down access to radio, cable, TV when the verdict was read. Maybe the missing piece of info was that the school didn’t know what the verdict was going to be - I think they were expecting a ‘guilty’ and more Rodney King-esque trouble. Of course, it was an ‘innocent’, with people cheering in the halls instead.

The riot ensued because it was simply the straw that broke the camel’s back due to an accumulation of events (and one that I accurately predicted would happen following the Latasha Harlins murder trail). When a segment of society is convinced that they can’t get justice from the justice system, then they are much more likely to step outside that system (I am merely making an observation, not a judgment).

I know thats the typical interpretation - but I wonder if we so expect injustice that we see it regardless. A police officer hitting a suspect? Clearly the police officer needs to be punished. Or was he defending himself from a violent suspect and used an appropriate amount of force in subduing him? I tend to trust a jury of my peers.

In regards to the O.J. Simpson trial, I suppose perhaps we should have rioted over an incompetent prosecution team getting bonuses...

Well, I got my bonus last year - so I can’t really riot over incompetent state workers getting bonuses...

As to the cartoons and protests - sooner or later the Islamic world is going to have to face down their own extremists or they will be devoured by them.

I agree completely.
