I can appreciate Tim's feelings on the subject. Anyone, right or not, who
thinks he is right can get angry when someone refuses to see "the truth". Even
those folks who don't believe in God behave this way at times.
I am a Christian too, and definitely prone to illogic and irrationality, but
not because I'm a Christian, but because I'm human. I am just like anyone else.
I'm deficient in many areas, and broken, and sinful, and still am. I have found
that arguing about any subject, be it lego or christianity, never changed
anyone's mind so I don't do it. If that were true, I think the whole world
would eventually be one religion or political party, and as far I can tell that
ain't gonna happen. I gladly answer any questions or problems people have about
subjects that I can answer. But the moment they endeavor to get personally
offensive I wonder if their motive is acquiring knowledge or persecution. Have
you ever been made of fun of just because you "play with lego"? What did that
feel like? Did it stop you from building? It didn't stop me, and it ain't going
to.
For anyone interested you can walk on eggshells around me if you want, but
don't be preoccupied with it (and I'm sure you're not: why should anyone be?).
If you insult my faith, there's absolutely no way I'm going to take it
personally. To do so means you probably don't know much about my faith anyway.
An impossibly broken person needs an impossible remedy. If you insult me
personally, that's your opinion. It doesn't mean that I'm super-tolerant
thinking that "any road leads to heaven", but it does mean that I'm going to
treat you civilly, no matter what you believe, because you deserve as much from
your fellow man because I believe all people are made in the image of God. If I
do have a desire to "win people over to my side" I'd rather have them know that
I'm not any better than they are, nor are they any better than me, and for them
to come over feeling welcome and invited rather than be scared, threatened or
worse.

| (...) Gee, thanks. that makes me feel this big --> . For some reason I'm coming fast to the end of being able to calmly discuss this without preaching to people. The only thing is for some reason you guys all read books so you can argue against (...) (26 years ago, 21-Dec-98, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)
