I think you are wrong. Dan owes nobody a reason. Dan does not NEED to explain why he runs his site the way he does. And people are going to think what they want to no matter what is said.. proof of that is already easy to see.

If he doesn’t explain himself and continues to run his business (1) like a crazed dictator than other users may worry that continued investment in BrickLink is not going to yeild returns. Examples - I’ve been pondering re-opening my Bricklink store, but I don’t want to do all the work necessary, if at some random moment, Dan may decide to boot me. Also as a customer, I have completely sworn off some stores (2) due to their business practices, if they cannot treat the customer in a professional manner, than I’ll take my money elsewhere. Alas there isn’t a real viable alternative to BL right now.

(1) Dan’s business is unique in that it relies on the customer in two tiers, first the sellers, who are the ones actaully selling anything. Dan only charges for a service. Second are the buyers who buy from the sellers, which is why the sellers stick around.

(2) Brick & Mortar stores. Such as a local Chevy dealer, their service department treat me crappy the first time I went there after buying a new van, as such, all of my subsequent van related needs where met elsewhere.

(...) "run his business like a crazed dictator" Where did you pull that from? He banned what he saw to be a problem member. That does NOT make him a crazed dictator. To even imply that is is acting like one is about as wrong as you can possibly get. (...) (20 years ago, 23-Aug-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate)

(...) ok, so take off the 'so bad' ;) But still, I do not see WHY Bricklink NEEDS Larry. And am more than curious as to why she thinks it does need him - in any way in any amount. (...)
