I think you are wrong. Dan owes nobody a reason. Dan does not NEED to explain why he runs his site the way he does. And people are going to think what they want to no matter what is said.. proof of that is already easy to see.

If he doesn’t explain himself and continues to run his business (1) like a crazed dictator than other users may worry that continued investment in BrickLink is not going to yeild returns.

I have a lot of respect for Dan and what he does at BL, to call him a “crazed dictator” is silly.

Examples - I’ve been pondering re-opening my Bricklink store, but I don’t want to do all the work necessary, if at some random moment, Dan may decide to boot me. Also as a customer, I have completely sworn off some stores (2) due to their business practices, if they cannot treat the customer in a professional manner, than I’ll take my money elsewhere. Alas there isn’t a real viable alternative to BL right now.

...because Dan saw a simple idea which he invested his time and cash in. Anyone else could have done the same (e.g Todd), but only Dan actually had the gumption to do it. Bricklink has revolutionised some aspects of this hobby; for that Dan deserves your thanks - not your contempt!

(1) Dan’s business is unique in that it relies on the customer in two tiers, first the sellers, who are the ones actaully selling anything. Dan only charges for a service. Second are the buyers who buy from the sellers, which is why the sellers stick around.

Hmm. I’m not sure it’s “unique” in that respect. Have you heard of this website: www.ebay.com? Or even Amazon’s “Marketplace”?

(2) Brick & Mortar stores. Such as a local Chevy dealer, their service department treat me crappy the first time I went there after buying a new van, as such, all of my subsequent van related needs where met elsewhere.

(...) Dan deserves quite a bit of thanks for what he's done. However, unlike many sites, BL was created as a business venture rather than a totally benevolent effort. People pay Dan to list their wares, they're buying a service. If Dan knows what's (...) (20 years ago, 23-Aug-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)

(...) Ok, that comment might have been over the top, but from my point of view, so was Dan's decision to boot Larry. (...) I'm not debating that BrickLink helped the hobby, I've certainly benefited from it's presence. As for Thanks, I thanked him (...) (20 years ago, 23-Aug-04, to lugnet.off-topic.debate, FTX)
